In order for you to be valuable to your company, make sure that you are very, very good at what you do, and that you bring other things to the table. Gone are the days when you do one task alone day in and day out. If you are an engineer, learn how to sell or market your products as well, to your stakeholders. If you are a customer service assistant, can you also do teller jobs?

Also, make sure that your work record is impeccable – no tardiness issues, no absenteeism, and most of all, no insubordination issues. Remember that the competition is getting tougher by the minute, and it is not enough that you are qualified for the job. You need to be highly qualified and you need a superb track record and personality to stay.
