Why We Work
There are three main reasons why we tend to push ourselves at work in order to achieve the fulfillment of either one of these needs or than we pursue a combination of all three.
Money
Money is one aspect of this diagram which is worked for in order to attain some sort of compensation in order to fund our assets or liabilities. The more money we gain the more assets/liabilities we can get in order to satisfy our emotional needs.
Some of the ways to improve the desire to work for money are the following:
- Provide them with bonuses
- Provide the ability to receive tips
- Provide them with gift certificates
- Provide them with additional compensation for over-time work
- Provide travel fare
Ego
Ego is another aspect of this diagram which appeals to individuals who seeks a sense of accomplishment and or recognition from their jobs.
Some of the ways to improve the desire to work to increase ones ego are the following:
- Provide them additional subordinates
- Reward them with trips
- Reward them with company awards
- Reward them with a different job title
- Recognize and showcase their achievements
Interest
Interest is another aspect of the diagram which appeals to individuals who solely work to fulfill their passion for the profession and purely enjoy it.
Some of the ways to improve the desire to work to increase ones interest in the position are the following:
- Allow them to push role specific initiatives
- Allow them to bring external knowledge to the position’s duties
- Allow them to improve efficiencies
- Allow them to complete personal role objectives
- Allow them to incorporate position trends/directions
- Allow them to build best practices
- Allow them to build out processes/improvements
- Allow them to perform role specific research
It is always good to remember to choose a position which is of interest to you as this will always be the most beneficial driving factor and will bring ‘ego’ and ‘money’.
